Copenhagen – New destruction

--

Last week, Børsen was about to collapse when a violent fire broke out.

Now a storm could cause further damage to the building, which is one of Copenhagen’s oldest.

Scaffolding had been installed along the walls in connection with a restoration.

Norwegian symbol

The stock exchange was built as a trading building by King Christian IV in the 1620s. It is used today as an office building.

The fire broke out on 16 April, and the iconic spire of the building fell into the flames. The “dragon spire” is designed as four dragon tails that twist around each other. It has three crowns on top which symbolized the great kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Denmark’s King Frederik thanked the rescue workers.

– This morning we woke up to a sad sight, when smoke over Copenhagen bore witness to the devastating fire at the Stock Exchange. An important part of our architectural cultural heritage is in flames, the king said in a statement last Tuesday.

– Our Notre Dame moment

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen compared the fire to the Notre-Dame fire in Paris five years ago.

– Terrible pictures from the Stock Exchange. So sad. An iconic building that means a lot to all of us, I think. Our Notre-Dame moment, said the defense minister.
