– At its meeting on 8 May 2024, the Council of Elders has taken up the challenge of loose gravel in the footpaths at Eidanger cemetery. There are many elderly people who walk in the cemetery. The loose gravel creates problems for wheelchairs, walkers, the elderly and people who have trouble walking. This applies especially to the hill down from the church.

That’s what Hans Martin Gullhaug, head of the council for the elderly, says.

The Elderly Council requests that a firm surface be laid on footpaths with loose gravel.

– The problem has lessened a little since the new ceremony building was opened. Many of the funerals take place there, but there are still a number of ceremonies from the church, says Gullhaug.

Problems

How did the Council for the Elderly get information about this?

– We hear from people who are experiencing problems, says Gullhaug.

He says that Porsgrunn’s ecclesiastical joint council is the right address for the matter, and that they are the ones who must ensure safe access to the cemetery.

The long hill from the old medieval church down to the cemetery, and partly the long distance to the graves, has long been a topic. At the longest, the distance can be around one kilometer. Winter time with ice and ice has also been a challenge.

– Important

The new ceremonial building and better logistics at the ceremonies are intended to address the problem, but according to Gullhaug, the joint council still has a way to go.

– It’s a small issue, but important to many, and our job is to address current issues that concern our generation, says the leader of the council for the elderly.
