Jolanda Fun chose to die on her 34th birthday. Several countries are now discussing active euthanasia.

KLUNDERT, THE NETHERLANDS (Aftenposten): There has been a large increase in the number of Dutch people receiving help to die. One group in particular is controversial.

Jolanda Fun shows us into the apartment she has lived in for the past 13 years. It is ribbed for furniture. Electricity and water are turned off. The car is sold.

Dutch Fun and the little dog Lola have moved in with mum and dad – just for a couple of days.

For the past two years, she has been working towards one goal: to die on her birthday.

Her mother’s attempts to get her to turn around have been of no use. The fact that she unexpectedly got a boyfriend didn’t ease the dark thoughts either.

– The rules are very strict. It’s been a long journey, but it’s death in a dignified way. Pain-free, performed by a doctor, says Fun to Aftenposten.

The Netherlands legalized euthanasia over 20 years ago. Mostly it has been given to the elderly with incurable diseases. Now something is about to change. Assisted dying for people with mental disorders is also increasing. That worries some.

At the same time, several countries are now debating whether active euthanasia should be introduced. But there are many dissenting voices.

The apartment has been terminated, and Jolanda Fun will soon hand over the keys.

The family has been allowed to pick up possessions to remember the 34-year-old.
