A very strong earthquake of magnitude 7.2 rocked Taiwan’s capital Taipei on Wednesday, prompting tsunami warnings for the island as well as parts of southern Japan.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of Taiwan’s Hualien City at a depth of 34.8 km.

The director of Taipei’s Seismology Center told international media that the earthquake was “the strongest in 25 years”.

Earthquake in Taiwan LIVE: Tsunami warning issued after earthquake

Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning in Taiwan and southern Japan. The agency said that tsunami waves as high as three meters (10 feet) were expected immediately for remote Japanese islands.

“Tsunami is coming. Please evacuate immediately,” Japanese national broadcaster NHK said.
