Five parties demand that the Zarina case be stopped – NRK Nordland

--

Zarina Saidova (32) was first informed by UDI that she would be banned from Norway for five years.

She complained, and was told earlier in April that UNE would ban her for two years. The reason is a lie the mother told when the two arrived in the country in 2005.

Zarina must be out of Norway on Wednesday, but on Tuesday SV, Venstre, MDG, Rødt and KrF will try to have the matter put on hold.

The parties have a total of 35 mandates in the Storting and must therefore combine support for the proposal with other parties.

Back to Kazakhstan

Zarina is leaving the country already on Tuesday morning, just hours before the Storting is to consider the proposal.

When she gets off the plane again later in the day, she is back in Kazakhstan for the first time since 2005.

– It feels very surreal. I am traveling back to what feels like a new country. Things have changed a lot in 19 years, says Zarina to NRK on Monday.

She has spent the last few days packing, Googling weather reports in her old home country and figuring out what clothes to take with her.

– I feel I have contributed a lot to Norway. Then it feels very tough to have three weeks to pack your things. I feel unwanted.

She hopes her case will make it easier for others who find themselves in the same situation in the future.

– This is a rule that is the same for everyone. Why should the Storting make an exception here?

– I don’t just want it to be different for me, but for it to be the same for everyone and for similar cases to be assessed proportionately.

All hope is not lost for Zarina. Minister of Justice Inger Enger Mehl (Sp) can stop the eviction immediately.

– When I land in Kazakhstan, I will find out the outcome of the case at the Storting. It feels like my life is in the Attorney General’s hands.

– Absolutely crazy

Rødt believes that Zarina’s case is so serious that the Storting must put it on hold.

– It is absolutely crazy that we should throw out someone who has lived here for 19 years, has family and friends and has created his own workplace in Norway, says one of the proponents, Tobias Drevland Lund in Rødt.

The Storting politician believes this is a completely wrong use of resources.

– It is not very strange that people react to this. That we should spend time, money and police resources on tracking people down and deporting them for something that is not theirs is not right.

He believes Zarina’s case shows a need for changes in eviction cases where parents have given incorrect information.

Will change the practice

On the same day, Venstre and SV propose, among other things, that the government must look at the proportionality of cases similar to Zarina’s. They also propose legislating a statute of limitations of 10 years for revoking residence permits and citizenship.

– That someone should be punished because a parent provided incorrect information 20 years ago is completely insane. That is why there should be a safety valve, says Venstre’s Ingvild Thorsvik.

Lan Mare Berg in the Green Party also reacts to the eviction of the 32-year-old, and supports the Liberal Party’s proposal.

– She came to Norway when she was 13 years old and is sent out of the country even though she has done nothing wrong. The proposals put forward are important not only for Zarina, but also for many others.

– This is about people who have lived a large part of their lives in Norway and are being punished because their parents did not tell the whole truth when they arrived. The rule of law does not function like this in any other areas of society.

Cannot comment on individual cases

NRK has previously been in contact with the Ministry of Justice, which says that they cannot comment on individual cases. They refer to an earlier answer Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp) has given to the Storting.

When the case was before the Storting in September last year, Mehl was asked by representatives from Rødt and SV about Zarina’s case. She also said then that she could not comment on individual cases, but understands that demanding situations and dilemmas can arise.

– I believe, on a general basis, that it is important that we have a system that enables us to uncover those cases where residence or other rights have been granted on an incorrect basis, where false information has been given. That we must not make arrangements for parents to use their children to obtain residence, or to keep residence that has been illegally obtained, Mehl said.
