This week there has been more good news for Ukraine. The United States has approved the long-awaited support package of 61 billion dollars. On Friday, Biden announced that the US is planning another arms package worth 6 billion dollars.

The upcoming package is part of a program of long-term support for Ukraine, and it may take months and even several years for the weapons to be in place in Ukraine.

Britain has also this week announced its largest aid package to Ukraine so far. The £500 million package will include around 400 vehicles, 60 boats, more than 1,600 missiles and four million rounds of ammunition. In addition, the UK is to supply Ukraine with several Storm Shadow missiles, which have a range of at least 300 kilometers.

Forced on the defensive

Military analyst Anders Puck Nielsen at the Norwegian Defense Academy and independent military analyst Hans Peter Michaelsen are both clear that artillery shells are now at the top of Ukraine’s list.

– This is artillery that is very important along the front line itself and has been the most decisive weapon in the war so far, explains Nilsen.

The lack of artillery ammunition is said to be the main reason why the Ukrainian army has had to be on the defensive in recent months.

Must be selective

The next item on the two military analysts’ list is air defense.

Throughout the winter and spring, Russia has carried out airstrikes against Ukrainian power plants and cities. If Ukraine had had more Patriot systems, which they have received as a donation from the United States, they would be able to defend themselves against the Russian attacks to a greater extent.

– They really lack something to deal with the Russian airstrikes. Ukraine will have to choose which city to protect. The more defense systems they have, the more cities they can protect, says Puck Nielsen.

Secret rockets

This week it also became known that Ukraine has secretly received several ATACMS missiles from the USA.

According to experts, the long-range missiles from both the United States and Great Britain play a major role for Ukraine, but they will probably not tip the war in Ukraine’s favor.

Storm Shadow is nevertheless an important tool to reduce the effectiveness of the Russian war machine and make it easier for the Ukrainians to defend themselves and to make it easier for them to go on the offensive, says Lars Peder Haga at the Norwegian Air Force School to ABC Nyheter.
