Birds chirping, sunshine and Easter are sure signs that we are approaching summer.

Therefore, it is time to remind that the clock must be set, and this year it happens on the night of Easter Sunday.

Until the summer

The clock will be set forward towards summer, from 02.00 to 03.00, which means that you will lose an hour this Easter weekend.

But at the same time, you can now enjoy brighter days.

Simple clocks, such as analogue wristwatches or the clock on the oven, you have to adjust yourself, while digital clocks connected to the network usually set themselves.

Who sets the digital clocks?

Justervesenet does not have the task of setting clocks to summer time, but is responsible for Norway’s official time.

This involves, among other things, adjusting atomic clocks in the lab, researching time and contributing to the system for the world’s common time, UTC.

If Justervesenet does not set the clocks, you are probably wondering how your PC, tablet or mobile can know what the correct time is. It is the operating system in the device that takes care of it.

Devices such as PCs and mobile phones actually have an independent clock that ticks and runs even when you switch off or disconnect from the network, but they are completely dependent on the operating system to check that the clock is running correctly and to “get notified” that it is summer time .

The vast majority of operating systems obtain time from time servers that use the Network Time Protocol (NTP). Justervesen has an open time server that provides UTC time over the network to computers. This NTP server responds to approximately 300 requests per second, which equates to approximately 20-25 million per day.

What must be done?

All you need to do is set the simple clocks on Sunday and enjoy the Easter weekend. Someone else will fix the rest so you can face the summer with open arms and precise time.
