The balloon skirt that Princess Diana wore is spring’s biggest trend

--

Ohit is 1987. It is the film festival in Cannes, and Princess Diana is in place in the French port city. She is dressed for the occasion in a white double-breasted blazer and striped dress – with a balloon skirt.

It undoubtedly breathed new life into the trend.

But the sculptural silhouette has roots that go back further than that.

It was the designer Cristobal Balenciaga who first introduced and made the silhouette popular in the 1950s.

It was admittedly only in the 80s that it really gained a foothold in terms of fashion: Madonna was a fan, and fashion designers such as Yves Saint Laurent showed it on the catwalk.

And since then, the silhouette has appeared again in the fashion picture at fairly regular intervals.

And now it’s back – as tops and bottoms, dresses, tops and especially skirts.

At least if we are to believe the designers and fashion houses that showed the eye-catching silhouette on the catwalk this season.

It hasn’t been terribly long since the last time, really. 2022, to be more precise. And before that, 2016 was the year when the silhouette dominated.

Also last spring, the balloon shape was on the trend radar, and designers and fashion houses such as Loewe, Louis Vuitton and Moschino all showed balloon-inspired silhouettes.

A kind of natural development from the low life, perhaps. For so-called drop waist trends now.

Style the balloon skirt with ballerina shoes and a cardigan if you want to go for the more coquettish expression of the balletcore trend.

Or use a simple white T-shirt and sandals for a more “down” look.
