News, Norwegian Road Administration | Highest number of traffic fatalities in ten years: – Any traffic accident with fatalities and serious injuries is a tragedy

--

This is shown by preliminary figures according to a press release from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

– March was a very sad month in traffic. 14 people killed is a significant increase compared to 2023 and previous years. The increase worries us, says department director Guro Ranes in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

Nine men, four women and one boy died. Two were pedestrians.

Seven died in head-on accidents, four in downhill accidents, and one in an accident with an electric scooter. Three people died in one of the collisions.

One of the total of twelve accidents occurred in Innlandet. The others took place in Agder, Rogaland, Telemark, Østfold, Oslo, Møre and Romsdal, Trøndelag and Troms.

– We are now entering a season where more people are out on the road. Both bicycles and motorcycles will once again be part of the traffic picture. Now it is extra important that everyone is aware, because there will be several groups of road users who are not always so easy to see, urges Ranes.

22 deaths so far this year

A total of 22 people lost their lives in traffic in January, February and March. There are nine more than last year, and the highest number since 2020, when 24 people died in the same period.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the police and others are constantly working to improve road safety. But if the number of accidents is to decrease, everyone must contribute. Ranes has the following appeal to road users:

– We know what works. Keep to the speed limit and adapt your speed to the conditions, drive without drugs, wear a seat belt and keep your attention on the road. Driving is the only thing you have to do.

Every accident is a tragedy

The accident figures vary from year to year and month to month. Fortunately, the number of people killed and seriously injured has decreased over time. Last year, 113 people died in traffic, compared to 147 in 2014.

– Every traffic accident with fatalities and serious injuries is a tragedy, and every accident is one too many. We must all continue to work to reduce the number of accidents, says Ranes.
