The new abortion law will contain an extension of the abortion limit to week 18, as the Abortion Committee recommended in the report presented last December.

Today, Norwegian women have the right to self-determined abortion up to week 12. The vast majority have an abortion before this, and almost everyone who applies for an abortion between week 12 and week 18 is approved by the tribunal, writes the newspaper.

– I think the Abortion Committee has provided a good rationale for it. They say that extending that limit for self-determination to 18 weeks would be in line with current practice. Then the legislature will be able to help clean things up, and put the decision where it belongs, namely with women themselves, says Kjerkol to VG.

Announces extension of the right to self-determination

There is great disagreement about this between the two governing parties, and Kjerkol does not want to provide the details of the proposal that the Storting will vote on.

– I would like to come back to the details when the bill is presented, she says, but confirms that the bill will contain the point about extending the right to self-determination.

The Minister of Health says that the government will present the proposal as soon as possible, and promises that the proposal will come in 2024.
