Norway is applying for the Biathlon World Cup in Holmenkollen in 2028 and 2029, but must fight for the championship. Holmenkollen is one of three candidates for the championship in 2028 and 2029.

This winter it became clear that the Norwegian Biathlon Federation (NSSF) and Oslo municipality are applying to have the Biathlon World Cup in Holmenkollen for two years in a row, 2028 and 2029.

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) now reports that there are a total of three candidates for the two championships. In addition to Norway and Holmenkollen, Austria is also applying to bring the championship to Hochfilzen and Finland has recorded Kontiolahti as its candidate.

Strong candidates
In connection with NSSF applying for the two championships this winter, NSSF general secretary Morten Djupvik argued for Holmenkollen’s experience as an organizer as a strength.

– Holmenkollen organizes the Biathlon World Cup every year, and we are a recognized organizer in the biathlon circus. That a large member nation such as Norway also undertakes major championships at regular intervals is both desirable and expected, said NSSF general secretary Morten Djupvik this winter.

Much of the same can also be said about Holmenkollen’s challengers.

Austria hosted the Biathlon World Cup in Hochfilzen in 2017 and also hosts the World Cup every year. Finland hosted the Biathlon World Cup in Kontiolahti in 2015, and the World Cup is also held there almost every winter.

The last time Holmenkollen organized the championship was in 2016.

The championships will be awarded during the IBU congress in Belgrade at the end of September.

The Winter WC will be held in Lenzerheide in Switzerland from 12 to 23 February 2025.
