Filipstad is to be developed into an environmentally friendly, sustainable and forward-looking district that is prepared for climate change. Norconsult, Nordic Office of Architecture and SLA are now engaged by Oslo municipality to create an overall plan for technical infrastructure, mobility and blue-green structure.

After the redevelopment of Aker Brygge, Tjuvholmen and Bjørvika in recent decades, the trip has now come to Filipstad and one of Oslo’s most attractive seafront sites. Filipstad is to be developed into a vibrant, new fjord district with close to 3,000 new homes, attractive business premises and a rich public offering.

Attractive sea front

The three consultants Norconsult, Nordic Office of Architecture and SLA have been engaged by Oslo municipality for the Filipstad assignment.

– We are looking forward to finding good, interdisciplinary solutions to the opportunities that such a comprehensive, close to the sea and central urban development project offers. Subject experts in our grouping will support the municipality of Oslo in their ambition to deliver a project in line with the UN’s sustainability goals and FutureBuilt’s sustainability criteria, says Bård Hernes, Executive Director Head Office at Norconsult.

FutureBuilt is an innovation program and showcase for the most ambitious players in the construction industry, where, among other things, climate and energy, social sustainability, circular buildings and districts are central.

Filipstad is a complex area, which places high demands on good cooperation between Oslo municipality, the advisers and others involved. Among other things, up-to-date infrastructure must be arranged, while Filipstad’s history is safeguarded, as well as good town planning measures and mobility solutions for the future.

– Now the premises are being laid for the Filipstad of the future, where a sustainable infrastructure will lay the foundation for a diverse district with a varied selection of homes and experiences, says Erik Urheim, partner and architect at the Nordic Office of Architecture.

Make the fjord available

The design of Filipstad has long been discussed, and the debate concerns, among other things, the relocation of the current foreign ferry terminal, the design of a new cover over the E18, the connection to Frogner and how the population of Oslo will be ensured access to the Oslo Fjord through the development of Filipstad. The landscape architect team at Filipstad is made up of specialist experts from both Norconsult and SLA.

– Creating the new coordinated plan for Filipstad is a landscape architect’s dream task. In Filipstad, we want to put nature first by creating an unstretched blue-green structure that protects the district against floods and torrential rain, and which at the same time optimizes it in relation to microclimate, air pollution, urban heat islands and biodiversity, says Kjersti Wikstrøm, general manager of SLA Norway.

Kjersti Wikstrøm also points out that nature-based design will create a wide range of varied urban spaces, parks and harbor promenades, which will make Filipstad a special area in Oslo with close contact to the fjord, an active city life, strong social communities and an increased quality of life.
