Now Tesla’s banned car is ready for all around Norway

--

Since the first plans were revealed in 2019, the myths about the Cybertruck have grown bigger than the car itself.

Not until 2023 did production of the electric pickup get underway in the United States.

And maybe Tesla won’t be able to get the right production move until next year.

That is to say: in Europe it may never come. Because the design of the car completely violates the European authorities’ safety requirements.

If it is to be sold in Europe, either the car or the regulations must be changed.

“Never Europe”

Cybertruck has an outer layer of 1.4 millimeter thick stainless steel plates. They meet in some extremely sharp joints. But European regulations require 3.2 millimeter rounding.

This is one of the main reasons why the current version of the car will not go on sale in Europe.

More consumer cases on Motor.no:

And it doesn’t help that the lower part of the front faces inwards, so that anything that gets in its way is dragged under the car – instead of being thrown over.

Lars Moravy, director of vehicle engineering at Tesla Motors, confirmed to Top Gear before Christmas that the car will probably never be available in Europe.

But his boss, Elon Musk, has thought highly – and non-committal – about a European special version.

Until then, of course, Tesla has had enough of ramping up production at the Giga factory in Austin.

Three engines

Nevertheless:

Thousands of Norwegians are heading to a Tesla store over the next six weeks to get a glimpse of the car. It is the “small” version, “Dual Motor” with four-wheel drive, that is sent around Norway.

“Small” in the sense of engine power compared to the larger, Cyberbeast “Tri Motor”.

External dimensions are the same on the two:

568 cm long, 241 cm wide, 179 cm high and with 40.6 cm ground clearance.

Both have a front drive with an electromechanical locking differential for better traction in slippery conditions, and they have steer-by-wire – a steering technology Tesla believes provides “maximum control with minimal input”. The intermediate shaft used in the steering mechanism of traditional cars has been removed, so there are no mechanical links between the steering wheel and the steering column.

“Drivers will never need to put their hands over their hands or remove their hands from the steering wheel when turning,” promises Tesla. Toyota and Lexus have also presented cars with the same use of electromechanical controllers and sensors.

Last stop

Although everything is in size XXL, the Cybertruck has unmistakable Tesla design in the interior. An 18.5-inch touchscreen at the front and a 9.5-inch one at the back, with certain Cybertruck finesse in the user interface, but as minimalist as Tesla drivers are used to – and with the light lines that were brought in with the upgraded Model 3.

The car comes with five seats, but two of the back seats can easily be folded up to benefit 1,500 liters of extra cargo space. Or a dog house.

The trunk holds 200 liters and the loading platform takes 1,700 liters, while the car can tow 4,990 kg. Curb weight is 3104 kg for the beast with three motors and 2995 kg for the Dual Motor.

The Tri Motor version does 0-100 km/h in 2.6 seconds and 515 km (optionally 708 km with range extender). For the Dual Motor, the figures are 4.1 seconds and 547 km (or 756 km).

PS: The Norway tour starts in Oslo this weekend, continues in Kristiansand, Stavanger, Bergen, Ålesund, Trondheim, Bodø and ends in Tromsø on June 13 – before this particular car, which is in Norway, will be transported to Iceland.
