Visa’s new conditions would mean that customers who pay with a mobile phone or smart watch would have to actively choose to pay with Bankaxept in a “default” solution when paying. Which in practice would have led to the bulk of such payments ending up with Visa.

The collaboration between Apple Pay and Bankaxept was scheduled to start from May, which would mean that the payment machine automatically selects the payment network. Normally this will be Bankaxept as this is the cheapest for the store.

Norges Bank recently made an estimate of how much various shop payments cost, and Bankaxept was clearly the cheapest at NOK 3.3 per payment. Payment by debit card cost NOK 4.7, and credit card NOK 10.4.

These store payments cost around NOK 2 billion annually for the stores.

The Danes agree with Bankaxept

Denmark decided on Friday last week that it agrees with Danish Dankort and Bankaxept, and rejects Visa’s new conditions for combined bank cards. The Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway has not yet made an assessment of the case.

– It is very gratifying that the Danish authorities give full support to BankAxept’s view in this matter. Visa’s new conditions obviously violate EU regulations, says Anders Lande, head of politics and society at BankId BankAxept, to Finansavisen.

He goes on to say that Bankaxept hopes Visa will contact the banks and withdraw the terms.
