Ethiopian authorities refused to accept her because the woman herself did not want to leave Norway.

It was at the airports in Addis Ababa that the two Norwegian police officers had to buy a return ticket to Betelhem Tamre Bitew this weekend after 15 hours. She herself refused to sign papers stating that she accepted the return.

As a result, the border control at the airport would not let her in either.

– I am very lucky, she says to Klassekampen.

Not only was she transported back to Norway. Now she has also been released from Trandum immigration boarding school.

“Bitew has lived in Norway for almost nine years, and has a large network in Norway, but has not received a residence permit,” writes the newspaper.

Earlier this year, 21 Ethiopians who have not been granted residence were detained at Trandum awaiting deportation.

Now the whole scheme is in jeopardy. Three other Ethiopians are already to be released from Trandum.

As long as the foreigners themselves refuse to leave, they are allowed to stay in Norway. Here, they also have full rights to social and health care.

Ethiopia is a major recipient of Norwegian aid. In 2023, according to Norad, they received over one billion kroner and are the sixth largest recipient of Norwegian aid funds.

Furthermore, Norway plans to give just over one billion kroner if Ethiopia achieves the goals in an agreement on reduced greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation in the country.
