Old Oslo, Culture and nightlife

--

– When I sit in my living room it feels like I’m in Ibiza.

That’s what Adriana Carvalho Ferreira says.

The bar downstairs has become a nuisance in recent months.

Now she hopes that the situation will improve.

Hear how it sounds to the neighbours:

Impossible to sleep

Adriana lives on the floor above the bar Poppy, which opened last year in Oslobukta in the former premises of the bar The Conservatory.

She moved into the apartment with her roommate Diana in February, and has since been bothered by noise.

– It is extremely noisy. We can hear absolutely everything from the bar, says Adriana.

She describes Fridays and Saturdays in recent months as “a nightmare”.

– I can hear the music just as well as if it were coming from inside our apartment, says Diana.

She says that the noise starts from around 9.30pm and lasts until 2am, in addition to the fact that they feel vibrations from the bass in their apartment.

– It is completely impossible to sleep before 02:00 at night, says Adriana.

Both she and Diana work as flight attendants, and they sometimes have to get up at 04:00 in the morning to get to work.

Complained in

The roommates have submitted several complaints to the municipality. In the complaint, Adriana writes that the noise has affected her health and she considers the situation stressful. In addition, she says that they have involved a lawyer.

The district has sent a letter to Poppy, asking for feedback on the noise complaints by 12 May.

– The neighbors must have tried to dialogue with you without this having led to an improvement in the noise level, says the letter from the Old Oslo district.

Noise measurements have now been taken from their apartment, so that the bar can initiate measures.

– We hope that it will get better, says Adriana.

Measures have been initiated

– We take complaints very seriously, says Kari Innerå, co-owner of Poppy.

She emphasizes that they are concerned about good neighborliness and have already initiated several measures to reduce the music following the noise measurements in the apartment.

– We are a small newly started cocktail and wine bar, and cannot be described as a nightclub with loud music, says Innerå and adds:

– We have a sound system of good quality, but we play music at a level where it is possible to hold a conversation. We are therefore surprised as the sound level is not perceived as high in the room.

The bar closes at 01.30, Friday and Saturday, and closes its doors at 02.00.

– When you live in an area like Oslobukta, with a bustling city life, you have to expect that there will be some noise, especially as we enter the summer season.

Carucel owns the building. Caroline Krefting, development director at the company, writes in an e-mail to Avisa Oslo that they are aware that there have been some challenges with noise, and that Poppy and Innerå have been keen to take mitigating measures through close dialogue with the neighbours.

At the same time, we must remember that the politicians have decided that this area should be a place with vibrant city life. It is also the reason why Oslo Bay has become a popular place for the entire city’s inhabitants, Krefting writes further.
