Oslo: – Several shots fired

--

The police reported the shooting, which took place at a kebab restaurant at Grønland Torg in Oslo, before 03:30 on the night of Sunday.

– We are in contact with a person who has injuries compatible with gunshots, says operations manager Line Kapskarmo in the Oslo police district.

The victim is a man in his 20s.

– The man was taken care of by health personnel on the spot and has been sent to hospital. He is described as seriously injured, says Annika Engebretsen, the police’s incident leader at the scene, to NTB.

No one arrested

As of 11 o’clock Sunday morning, no one has yet been arrested, police attorney Gina Elisabeth Salvesen told Dagbladet.

There is still a status just before 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon.

However, the police have seized a firearm which they link to the incident.

– Work is now continuing with several investigative steps, including camera surveillance and witness interviews. As the police assess the situation, there is no danger to third parties, says Salvesen.

On Sunday afternoon, police attorney Maria Husebye Fossen stated that the weapon was found outdoors near the crime scene.

She further confirms that the police are looking for more than one perpetrator.

– We are investigating broadly into several environments, without me going into detail. More than one shot was fired, says Fossen to Dagbladet.

More witnesses

The police received several reports about the shooting just after 03:00 on Sunday night. When they arrived at the scene, they found the injured man inside the kebab restaurant.

He was then conscious.

According to witnesses, the shots probably came from outside and towards the injured man. Both employees and customers were in the restaurant when the shots were fired.

The police also want to get in touch with people who were in the vicinity of Grønland Torg between 02:00 and 04:00 on the night of Sunday.

– All tips are relevant, says Salvesen.

The general manager of Beirut Kebab in Smalgangen, Ali Issam Kanaan, confirms to VG that this is where the shooting took place.

– We have experienced a lot of noise, but never anything like this, he says to the newspaper.

The police: Probably not by chance

On the night of Sunday, the police had no concrete suspects on the block.

– The police investigated the case with high intensity throughout the night, and this work will continue at full strength throughout the day, says operations manager Rune Hekkelstrand on Sunday morning.

However, the police suspect that the injured man is not a random victim.

– As we see it, it is most likely a relationship between the parties, says task leader Engebretsen, without wanting to go into it further.

As of Sunday afternoon, the victim has still not been questioned.

– We have also worked on reviewing video surveillance from the site. It has given us a better picture of what happened, says police attorney Fossen, who does not want to comment on whether the police have secured video of the shooting itself.

Several episodes of violence

The shooting in Greenland joins a series of several serious incidents of violence in Oslo recently:

  • On 15 April, a young man in his late teens was shot in a hairdressing salon in Bryn. Six people have so far been charged in connection with the shooting, which the police believe may be an act of revenge after a brutal kidnapping in Romerike last year, according to Dagbladet’s information.
  • On 19 April, a man in his late teens was sent to hospital with stab wounds, after he was found outdoors at Vålerenga. No one has been arrested.
  • On the night of 20 April, a man in his 30s was sent to hospital after being stabbed in the city centre.
  • On 22 April, an 18-year-old boy was shot in Holmlia. It is currently unclear what happened, but one of the police’s hypotheses is that the shot went off by accident.
  • On Saturday evening, a man was sent to hospital after being stabbed in Møllergata in central Oslo. No one has been arrested so far, but the police are looking for two perpetrators. The victim was not seriously injured.
