Statistics Norway (SSB) has presented new figures on what we Norwegians own and have in the bank. And it is not small. On average, we had 3.8 million in calculated net worth, i.e. property and other assets such as savings and shares, less debt.

But even if the average is high, it is unevenly distributed. But gives a more sober picture. The median net worth is NOK 1,958,100, according to Statistics Norway’s statistics.

The fact that Norwegians largely own their own homes contributes to wealth building. The rise in housing prices has led to increased assets. Only 10 percent own a secondary home.

Almost everyone, 98 percent, has money in the bank. The median bank deposit was NOK 215,000. The debt is also evenly distributed across the population. 85 per cent have debt and the median debt was NOK 860,000.

The elderly are the richest

If there should be any doubt, then it is the older people who are the best at it.

In the age group 67–79, the median net worth is over four million.

The youngest have less than a tenth of this. In the age group 25–34, the assets amount to NOK 339,300. There is a natural explanation for this: building wealth requires stable income over time. Households with elderly people often have two financial contributors, who provide double income, writes SSB.

The ultra-rich

One small group consisting of 2,545 households, all of which had an estimated net worth of at least NOK 135 million or more. Unlike most households, assets in shares and other securities are by far the largest asset among these households, with an average value of close to NOK 360 million in 2022.

These groups accounted for 10.9 per cent of Norwegian households’ total wealth, reports SSB.

City and country, not hand in hand

But the wealth is unevenly distributed across the country. In Finnmark, we find most people with low incomes and assets, according to the income and asset statistics.

A full 30.4 per cent have income and assets of less than NOK 250,000 in the country’s northernmost county. In Oslo too, there are also many, as much as 30.1 per cent, who have income and assets below this amount.

But here there are even more with income and assets above NOK 4 million, namely 39.3 per cent.

There is also a lot of money in circulation in Viken. In the county, which in 2022 also included the wealthy municipalities of Asker and Bærum, 38.8 percent have income and assets over NOK 4 million. They also had the fewest with low incomes and small assets.
