After almost 20 years, the saga of Tori Spelling (50) and her husband Dean McDermott (57) is apparently at the end of the road. The stormy marriage has resulted in five children, infidelity, police reports, financial crises and mental breakdowns.
Already last autumn, Dean came to terms with his own behavior when he moved out and lived with another woman for a period:
– All Tori has ever done is want me to be happy and healthy, while I caused her hurt and pain. I took something beautiful and tore it apart, year after year, day after day, he told the Daily Mail in October.
When the couple met in 2005, she was the world-famous star of the TV hit “Beverly Hills 90210”, produced by her wealthy father Aaron Spelling (1923-2006).
Dean McDermott was a Canadian B-actor with mixed success – and a bunch of supporting roles to show for it.
Both were married on separate sides when they starred together in “Mind Over Murder” in Canada. He was married to Mary Jo Eustace (61) while she was married to Charlie Shanian (59). But they fell head over heels, each arranged their own divorce and married in Fiji the following year.
When Aaron Spelling died that same year, both Tori and her new husband probably thought they would be able to roll over in money. But Tori was at odds with her mother, Candy (78), who inherited everything. Tori did not receive a penny of her father’s billion-dollar fortune.
In 2007, the couple had their son Liam (17) and made their own reality series, “Tori & Dean: Inn Love”, where they ran a boarding house together. In 2008, they had their daughter Stella (15), while the reality show continued, this time with the title “Tori & Dean Home Sweet Hollywood”.
Dean claimed in the press that Tori had broken up with mom Candy Spelling, but money never turned up.
In 2010, they renewed their marriage vows in a grand ceremony in Beverly Hills, and the photos from the wedding were sold to the highest bidder. Two months later, Dean fell while riding a motorcycle and was hospitalized with a punctured lung.
The following year they had their third child, daughter Hattie (12), and just one month after the birth, Tori became pregnant again!
The couple ventured into a new reality series, “Tori & Dean: sTORIbook Weddings”, which was about their business as wedding planners.
But now there started to be a lot of drama for the couple.
Tori had to go to hospital while she was pregnant. She had a placenta in situ and woke up to find she was bleeding profusely. Dean got her to the hospital, where the doctors were able to stop the bleeding. Tori had to stay in the hospital until the birth, and Finn (11) was delivered by caesarean section.
Now there were strong rumors of marital problems, while Tori denied the claims.
– I can handle the media uproar, but my husband has never done anything but love me and the children, she told People.
But their reality series was scrapped from TV in 2013, and Dean cheated on Tori. He checked into rehab to deal with health problems and personal challenges in January 2014, and later in the year he admitted – in the couple’s new reality series “True Tori” – that he had cheated on his wife:
– I feel shame. I have never felt shame before. You were at a Christmas tree party with the kids, while I was with someone else. It’s disgusting!
The couple worked through the crisis, and in 2016 Dean proposed to Tori again … It bore fruit, and in 2017 they had their fifth child, son Beau (7).
– I feel that Beau became the pillar for the restoration of our relationship. Our relationship had to fall apart to be rebuilt, Spelling told People in December of that year.
At this time, the couple was struggling with serious financial problems. They owed almost NOK three million in tax and had credit card debt of NOK 400,000. Tori and Dean had to move to a smaller house, but managed to make things up.
In March 2018, the police had to go to their home in Woodland Hills in Los Angeles. Police Officer Drake Madison told People that the situation ended up being a “domestic disturbance” and that no crime was committed.
According to the audio recording of the emergency call, which was referenced by TMZ, the issue involved “a woman with a possible mental disorder.”
In the years since, there have been several call-outs, but no arrests.
The couple admitted in 2020 that they slept in separate rooms, and the following year Dean was not included in the family’s Christmas card. On New Year’s Eve, she celebrated with the kids on a trip to Lake Arrowhead, while Dean stayed home.
Last summer, he took to Instagram and announced that the marriage was over:
– It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 wonderful children, @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways and start a new journey on our own. We will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love our children through this difficult time,” he wrote alongside a photograph of himself and Spelling, as well as a photo of the now-former couple with their children.
Afterwards, he removed the post, and the couple tried again to repair their marriage.
But in October, Dean suddenly appeared arm in arm with another woman – social worker Lily Calo. And then Tori wouldn’t be any worse. On Halloween, she publicly kissed PR agent Ryan Cramer outside a nightclub in Los Angeles.
Winter passed, and the couple continued their messy private lives. One day there was reconciliation, the next day it was war again.
On Good Friday, Tori filed the papers to file for divorce from Dean. She demands contributions, as well as full parental rights for the children.
On Easter Sunday 31 March, she elaborated on all the warning lights she should have taken into account along the way:
– We had been together for four months when I realized that his anger, which was often triggered by alcohol, could become a problem. When he drank, it was difficult because I knew at some point he would get angry. It could be two drinks, it could be 5-6 drinks. And I had to walk on needles. Things were never the same after we had children, Tori Spelling explained in her own podcast “misSPELLING”.
