After the smash success of “The Curse”, Hollywood actress Emma Stone (35) is now getting ready to resume the role of producer, together with her husband Nathan Fielder (40).

And it is not just any person the film should be about, seen through Norwegian eyes.

The film will tell the story of the chess drama between Magnus Carlsen (33) and Hans Niemann (20), which shocked the whole world at the end of 2022.

Flipped up millions

The rights to the film were anything but cheap, if reports are to be believed.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the American entertainment company A24 will have thrown a two-digit million kroner on the table to secure the rights to Ben Mezrich’s book, “Checkmate” (checkmate).

The book deals with the chess scandal that took the world by storm, when Magnus Carlsen accused competitor Hans Niemann of cheating after losing to him in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup in September 2022.

Other topics covered in the book are how chess has developed into a billion-dollar industry, and the so-called “collision between tradition and innovation” in the sport.

Chess scandal

Niemann himself has categorically denied that he cheated in the much talked about chess game in the Sinquefield Cup.

In the aftermath of the incident, Niemann has come out harshly against the Norwegian.

– Of course he is a bully. He used his entire empire and his contacts in chess.com, Niemann stated in an interview with TV personality Piers Morgan.

Niemann initially sued Carlsen for large sums following the cheating allegations. In August, however, it became known that the conflict was resolved and over.

The statement said, among other things, that both parties had worked to resolve the situation and “let the chess world move forward without further litigation”.

Although Niemann denies having cheated during the Sinquefield Cup, the young chess player has admitted two cases of online chess cheating. An extensive report from Chess.com in 2022 showed that Niemann had probably cheated in over 100 chess games – as recently as 2020.
