– Prices at Vinmonopolet are affected by the same mechanisms as the rest of society. General price increases and inflation, exchange rates, increased raw material costs and similar considerations also affect our prices, says manager Trond Erling Pettersen for trade and trade at Vinmonopolet to NTB.

A check on Vinmonopolet’s website on Friday morning this week shows that there are now only six types of white wine left for less than a hundred kroner that can be ordered from all Vinmonopolet.

The vast majority of wines in this price range are either out of stock or sold out.

There are no red wines under NOK 100 left that can be ordered. All are either discontinued or sold out, but some stores still have a few bottles left. They cannot be ordered to another pole, so you have to show up in person.

Poland’s cheapest wine: Only one bottle left

On Friday morning, there was only one bottle left for under NOK 90 on the shop shelves.

We are talking about a bottle of Portuguese white wine, Chocapalha Vinha da Palha Branco 2010, at NOK 84.90. According to the websites, the bottle was on the pole in Rødberg in Numedal.

Vinmonopolet initially also offers a red wine for under NOK 90, a 3 Generations of Peace Organic Shiraz 2020 from South Africa for NOK 89.40, but it is sold out throughout the country – and also online.

Cheap wines are coming back

On 1 May, there will be new prices at Vinmonopolet.

– From 1 May, there are three wines that will cost less than NOK 90 for a 0.75 liter bottle, and all three are in the order selection. A red wine, a rosé wine and a sparkling wine, says Pettersen.

None of these wines will be part of the basic selection, i.e. the wines that all Vinmonopol have. But it will be possible to order them to your local pole.

– There will be two wines in the basic selection at NOK 99.90 after 1 May. In total, after 1 May, there will be 68 wines in 0.75 liter bottles available for under NOK 100 in Vinmonopolet’s range, says Pettersen.

Inflation

He points out that wine follows the price increase, like all other goods.

– The rise in prices in society in general in recent years has meant that NOK 90 in 2021 is equivalent to approximately NOK 100 in 2023. What cost NOK 90 in 2023 was equivalent to NOK 80 in 2021 – and so on. There are therefore some “laws of nature” which dictate that prices will probably increase slowly, but surely, also in the years to come, he says.

It is not Vinmonopolet itself that sets its prices, but the wholesalers who deliver the products. The levy level is also high, and amounts to approximately 57 per cent of the selling price of a regular bottle of wine with 13 per cent alcohol. Vinmonopolet takes an advance of 12–13 per cent.
