American soldier arrested in Russia – NRK Urix – Foreign news and documentaries

Spokesman John Kirby in the White House states on Monday evening that they are aware that an American soldier has been arrested in Russia.

According to NBC News, the soldier has been stationed in South Korea and has traveled to Russia in his spare time.

He is accused of stealing from a woman.

Spokesperson Cynthia O. Smith at the US defense says that the arrest took place in Vladivostok on May 2, writes CNN.

Several arrested

The soldier is not the only one who has been arrested in Russia in recent years.

Among the most famous is Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovic, who was arrested for espionage just over a year ago.

According to the FSB, Gershkovich collected information amounting to state secrets about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian army.

The FSB claims that Gershkovich acted on instructions from the US authorities, but the claims are not supported by evidence.

In 2020, Paul Whelan was sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage.

Whelan claims he is innocent and that he was tricked by Russian police.
