It has been clear for some time that Nio wants to create a competitor to the Tesla Model Y, under a new brand. “Alps” was the name initially – before “Onvo” started appearing here and there a couple of months ago.

Now both Reuters and CarNewsChina write that the unveiling will come already in May. The name Onvo has been officially confirmed, and it concerns the model L60.

– Nio is currently working on the launch of new brands, less premium, but of course 100 percent electric and better adapted to the European market, says Nio’s France manager Nicolas Vincelot, according to Reuters.

Even cheaper next year

He therefore speaks in the plural and refers to Onvo L60 next to “Firefly” – presumably still a code name, like “Alps” – a brand whose first model will reportedly be a smaller car with a starting price of just over NOK 300,000.

Nio expects the L60 to go on sale within the year, while the Firefly project is part of the plans for 2025.

More efficient than Model Y?

For the time being, the L60 details must be taken with a couple of pinches of salt, but battery packs of 60-90 kWt, supplied by BYD, should be confirmed. It is probably also true that the battery packs will be thinner than previous generations.

There are also claims of a lower weight and drag coefficient than Model Y, as well as a level of quality almost on par with existing Nio models, but it is probably wise to classify this as unconfirmed rumors and subjective assessments – at least for the time being.
