USA: Sulfur in Oklahoma crushed by tornado:

--

– The devastation is unbelievable, says Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt after a visit to the small town on Sunday.

– It feels as if every business in the center has been destroyed.

Sulfur has around 5,000 inhabitants, and was hit very hard by one of several tornadoes that swept through the US state of Oklahoma on the night of Sunday, AP writes.

The pictures from the city show enormous destruction. Shops have lost roofs and walls, cars have spun around and building material is strewn around the streets.

The storm continues

In total, four people have lost their lives in connection with the storm in Oklahoma this weekend, and over 100 people have been injured, writes the AP news agency. Several of them are said to have been hit by flying objects.

Governor Stitt has declared a state of emergency in 12 of the state’s counties.

The United States has been hit hard by tornadoes in recent weeks.

This weekend alone, a series of storms have done major damage in the American Midwest.

In addition, flood and tornado warnings have been issued for both Oklahoma and several other states, including Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Texas, writes NTB

Reported dead in local bar

– How do you rebuild this? This is total destruction, says Kelly Trussell to AP.

She has lived in Sulfur all her life.

– It’s sick, you want to help, but where do you start? she asks.

In the streets of Sulphur, AP also meets Carolyn Goodman, who has traveled from the nearby town of Ada to search for her former sister-in-law. She is said to have visited a local bar just before the storm hit.

– The bar was destroyed. I know they probably won’t find her alive. But hope still lives, she says.

Governor Stitt has said that one of the dead has been found in a bar, but the person in question has not been identified.

– Very dangerous

The city of Omaha in the state of Nebraska has also been hit hard by storms this weekend.

Bruce Bonacci of the local police tells NBC that several hundred homes have been destroyed, especially in the Elkhorn area west of the city.

According to Lindsay Huse of the local authorities in the county of Douglas, where Ohama is located, no one has been seriously injured as a result of the devastation. At a press conference, he calls it “a miracle”.

In the state of Iowa, Governor Kim Reynolds has declared a state of emergency for Pottawattamie County. Here, between 40 and 50 houses are said to have been smashed by a tornado.

– It is very dangerous right now. We have closed the roads into the city, except for people who live here. 50 percent of the city has major damage, says Jeff Theulen at the local sheriff’s office.

Correction

By mistake, the tornadoes were referred to as hurricanes in several places in the first version of this article. This was corrected on 29 April at 01:18.
