In recent months, several defense chiefs, intelligence chiefs and military experts have warned that Russia may be able to attack NATO within a two- to five-year period.

The background for such a scenario is the rapid rearmament that is taking place in the world’s largest country in terms of area, and ninth largest in terms of population – Russia.

Vladimir Putin, who is increasingly referred to as a dictator in an authoritarian regime, has put the country on a war footing. It is happening at the same time as hundreds of thousands of Russian soldiers are either killed, wounded or missing.

According to Germany’s defense minister, Boris Pistorus, Russia overproduces weapons and ammunition. He warns that it could mean Russian military ambitions far beyond Ukraine, and that the West must prepare for all eventualities, including direct attacks on NATO.

– Produces more weapons than they need

– The Russian defense industry is in the process of rebuilding stocks of weapons and ammunition to a greater extent than the country’s current needs for the war in Ukraine. Now you can be naive and say that Putin is only doing it out of caution. As a skeptical person, I would say in this case that he does it because he has plans, says Pistorus to German NTV.

If the unthinkable were to happen, that Russian forces are ordered to attack one of NATO’s 32 member states, it would mean that NATO’s Article Five would be triggered.

Then all the countries of the alliance, including Norway, will be obliged to respond militarily, because an attack on one country means an attack on the entire defense alliance.

– Russia will inevitably be defeated

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski believes it will be the downfall of Putin’s regime.

– Russia will inevitably be defeated if it attacks a NATO member state. The alliance has three times more military personnel, three times more air resources and four times more ships than Russia, says Sikorski to the Polish radio station RMF, according to Ukrainska Pravda.

The combined GDP of NATO and EU countries is 20 times greater than that of Belarus and Russia combined.
