Kompani Lauritzen abuses the Red Cross

--

In “Kompani Lauritzen”, the participants will go through Colonel Dag Otto Lauritzen’s military regime, where the goal is for them to become a better version of themselves.

– Complete failure

On the way, they have to go through a series of challenges and exercises. Now vigilant viewers have noticed a detail that has caused experts to react.

– Very unfortunate

Camilla Guldahl Cooper is an associate professor at the Staff School at Forsvarets Høyskole. She tells Dagbladet that the red cross – which is a protective emblem – can only be used for sanitary personnel and their patients. Cars with such a mark on them cannot therefore be used for the transport of combatant personnel when there is a war.

When the participants in last Saturday’s episode were to carry out an ambush against an enemy, they afterwards fled away in a car marked with a red cross.

This is misuse of the protection emblem.

– It is very unfortunate for TV 2 to give the impression that this is okay, because it is not. It undermines the protection of sanitation and healthcare personnel, and we have seen enough of that in the news that it can have very big consequences, explains Cooper.

– The Red Cross has an important function. It allows health personnel to provide help and to do the job they are supposed to do, even if there is war. The protective emblem must be respected, and if it is misused, trust in it is weakened. The ones who suffer from it are the sanitary facilities, which may next be attacked.

– Lack of knowledge

Benedicte Røvik is a legal adviser in the unit for humanitarian values in the Norwegian Red Cross. She also reacts to the use of the red cross in “Kompani Lauritzen”.

– This was not entirely lucky. It probably shows a lack of knowledge about the Red Cross and its use, Røvik believes.

– Felt a little lust for fame

– The red cross is a protective emblem and shows that one is entitled to special protection in war or armed conflict according to the international law of war, such as, for example, sanitary personnel. It must not be used if one participates in acts of strife. There are also rules for when and how the Red Cross can be used in peacetime.

Røvik adds that the TV episode does not of course show a real war, but thinks it is still problematic how it appears.

– A wrong image is given here of the use of the red cross, and incorrect use and misuse of the emblem can, in the worst case, lead to poorer protection and put lives at risk. Therefore, we believe it is important that correct information is disseminated, and this is something that the Norwegian Red Cross is continuously working on.

– We receive many tips about incorrect use and abuse, and believe that in most cases it is about a lack of knowledge about the emblem and the rules for its use. We are happy to assist TV 2 with advice and input on the international law of war and the use of the emblem, if they wish.

Admits miss

Dagbladet has presented the criticism to TV 2’s press manager, Jan-Petter Dahl, who admits that they have made a mistake.

– Unfortunately, there has been a mistake here, and we apologize for that.

– These are civilian cars that have been hired in connection with admission. The lessor uses this car as a medical vehicle at military history meetings, and the emblem should have been removed before this recording, explains Dahl.
