Kendry Paez is only 16 years old, but is already listed with six national team matches for Ecuador. Last summer, Chelsea secured the shooting star for over NOK 200 million.

In Ecuador, Paez is referred to as “all of South America’s new jewel”. He became the youngest ever South American, aged 16 years and 161 days, to score in a World Cup qualifier in the 2-1 win over Bolivia in October.

Now Paez is getting attention for completely different things. Ecuador’s football association has made threats to remove the 16-year-old and several teammates from the national team squad.

This happens after several of the players allegedly went to a strip club in New York during the national team meeting. Videos of Paez and several of the other national team stars are being spread on social media – including at the strip club.

Billion signing attended

In addition to Paez, teammates Jeremy Sarmiento, José Cifuentes, John Yeboah and Willian Pacho are said to have been pictured during the celebration. Chelsea’s billion-dollar signing Moisés Caicedo was also out.

The city trip must have happened after the private international match against Guatemala on Friday 22 March. Already on Sunday, Ecuador played another private international match, which ended in a loss against Italy.

At a night club, Caicedo and his teammates were seen dancing. Other videos show Paez at a strip club with teammates Robert Arboleda and Gonzalo Plata.

The incident has caused reactions in Ecuador, not only since the players went to a strip club, but also since Paez is only 16 and far below the US age limit of 21.

Throwing money at strippers

In a video in which Paez is also involved, Sao Paulo player Arboleda can be seen throwing money at a stripper. Ecuador’s football federation is now warning that players may risk not being selected in the future.

The Football Association confirms in a press release that the players were given time off after the match against Guatemala, and writes that the deadlines were met. Furthermore, it states that the images of the players go against their “values ​​and principles”.

– Images of events that go against the values ​​and principles that we defend and promote as an institution have been spread, which will be the subject of analysis for future withdrawals, it says.

Took to social media

After going on the town and being pictured throwing money at a stripper, Arboleda didn’t want to apologize. According to the Daily Mail, he took to social media after the scandal.

“From now on, on my days off, I’m going to start reading the Bible, because you can’t even have fun, I promise,” Arboleda is said to have written.

His teammate Plata, who plays for the Qatari club Al-Sadd, also responded to the criticism. The post must have later been deleted.

“They don’t like anything, it’s bad to have fun,” he is said to have written on social media.

Both Arboleda and Plata have been sanctioned by the football association in the past. The duo were among five players who partied the night before a match against Argentina in 2017.

Arboleda also attended a party in a hotel during the Copa America in 2019. Plata was also involved in a controversial episode in 2021 when he injured two people in a car accident.
