That’s until ComicBook.com Bruckheimer announces plans to reboot the world famous film franchise.
– We are going to reboot “Pirates”, so it is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors, he says according to the website.
ComicBook spoke with the producer behind films such as “Armageddon” (2006), the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films and “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022) in connection with an upcoming film, but took the opportunity to ask if there is more to come the famous franchises.
Bruckheimer pointed out that while it is difficult to say with “Top Gun”, because of an iconic actor associated with the films, namely Tom Cruise, it is therefore clear for more of “Pirates of the Caribbean”.
New start for the film series
The word Bruckheimer uses is “reboot”, which is when you start a familiar concept again.
Often a reboot can be confused with a remake, which also uses new actors, but a reboot can also choose a completely new story in the same universe.
“Spider-Man” is one example of a movie franchise that has had several reboots.
Seven years since the last film
The previous and fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” film from Disney, “Salazar’s Revenge”, came in 2017. Norwegians Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg were then directors.
Since then, the main role in the “Pirates” series so far, Johnny Depp, who played the pirate captain Jack Sparrow, has been involved in a scandal-ridden trial against his ex Amber Heard.
The trial ended with Depp winning, but then Heard appealed and the parties settled.
Norwegian collaboration with Bruckheimer
Joachim Rønning, on the other hand, has continued to make films with Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer.
In January last year, Rønning confirmed to VG that he will direct the upcoming “Tron: Ares” with Jared Leto – an independent sequel to “Tron” (1982) and “Tron: Legacy” (2010). It is believed that the Disney movie will arrive in 2025.
In addition, Rønning has recently directed “Young Woman and the Sea” with Bruckheimer as producer. It is expected in cinemas this year.
On the film database Imdb, “Untitled Pirates of the Caribbean Project” is listed under Rønning’s upcoming films, but this has not been confirmed. NRK has tried to contact Rønning on Wednesday without success.
There have long been rumors about a sixth “Pirates” film, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, among others. They write that Margot Robbie was linked to a possible sixth film in 2022.
All five previous films grossed over $650 million worldwide. “Dead Man’s Chest” (2006) and “On Stranger Tides” (2011) both grossed over one billion dollars.
