The reality-based Netflix series “Baby Reindeer” is about and was also written by the Scottish comedian Richard Gadd (34). He also stars in the series, which is based on Gadd’s real-life experience of being stalked, and sexually abused, in his twenties.
A central character in the series is the female stalker Martha, who is played by Jessica Gunning (38), and it didn’t take long before viewers began to speculate about Martha’s real identity.
– Stop looking for my stalker
One of the women who has been named as the character now reveals that she allegedly received death threats in the wake of the show’s popularity. The woman herself tells the Daily Mail, reproduced by Deadline.
She claims she never pursued the Scottish comedian and that the roles have now been reversed. According to the woman, Gadd allegedly stalked and harassed her under the name “Baby Reindeer”.
– He’s using Baby Reindeer to stalk me now. I am the victim. He has written a whole fucking series about me, says the woman and accuses the comedian of having a “protagonist complex”.
In the series, the 34-year-old is named after Martha’s stuffed animal that she had in childhood – a teddy bear in the shape of a baby deer.
Left behind tons of debt
– I have never owned a baby deer toy, nor had I ever had a conversation with Richard Gadd about it, she continues.
Gadd and Gunning have previously discouraged viewers from digging into the character’s real identity.
– Please, stop speculating about who these people really are. That is not the point of our series, wrote the former in a post on Instagram.
Gadd, who is an ambassador for an organization that helps male victims of sexual abuse, explains that people in his circle have been affected by all the speculation.
Gunning, for his part, believes that it is “really sad” and that it is “not the goal of the series at all”, according to Deadline.
