Fears serious consequences for Oslo Central Station

--

It is in an interview with Avisa Oslo that the CEO of Bane Nor Eiendom, Jon-Erik Lunøe expresses concern that the Planning and Building Agency (PBE) does not want to support the proposal.

Bane Nor wants to build a new 100-metre high-rise building, which they believe can contribute to financing a major upgrade of today’s existing buildings.

It is therefore these plans that PBE will not pass on to public scrutiny.

“The high-rise building will have too many negative consequences for the surrounding area worth preserving, Østbanehallen and Jernbanetorget, and leave too much of a mark on the cityscape. The view from the Castle to Ekebergåsen, via Egertorget and further down through Karl Johans gate is not well looked after, and it will dominate the cityscape and perception of Oslo from too many places in the city. Oslo’s urban landscape and Oslo city center’s identity will change and be significantly weakened, writes agency director of PBE, Siri Gauthun Kielland in a reader’s post in the local newspaper.

“People must be allowed to have their say on our plans,” says a frustrated Lunøe to AO.

Bane Nor believes that the development of Norway’s most important hub is so precarious that the city’s residents should be allowed to take part in the debate and the design of the plans.

But PBE does not want any high-rise buildings south of the current track area. Bane Nor himself believes that the high-rise is within the current guidelines and regulations.

Lunøe fears that the consequences could be enormous if nothing is done in the area, as the company estimates a doubling of traffic by 2050.

“Two of today’s three entrances are not even sized for today’s traffic”, it is claimed.
