The weather divides Norway in two on 17 May – NRK Vestland

--

– It can look as if the country is divided in two. It may be a bit like last year, says the state meteorologist Charalampos Sarchosidis about the weather on 17 May.

The temperatures are relatively stable: it gets hot in the south and cold in the north.

The precipitation, however, is still a nut for the meteorologists.

This is connected to the fact that there is low pressure both south and north of Norway.

The low pressure moves quite quickly. A small change in where the low pressure lies and moves can cause big changes in the weather.

– The location of low pressure in the south and in the north will probably change in the future with the next forecasts, so it is important to follow the details.

Snow in the air in the north

In Northern Norway, winter temperatures are expected when sausages, ice cream and soft drinks are to be consumed. There may also be some cities with sleet and snow at high altitudes.

The cold weather is expected north from Bodø.

There is a risk that some wintry air masses will come through. On 17 May itself, the air may be brought inland along with some cities with sleet, says Sarchosidis.

He is quite sure of the cold. There is more uncertainty associated with the precipitation.

If there is precipitation, it comes both along the coast and inland. It will come as snow at altitude.

But the forecasts have changed day by day, and it is difficult to predict whether there will actually be precipitation or not.

– Before forecast had, for example, no precipitation, while this forecast has snow showers along the whole of northern Norway. Everything depends on where the low pressure hits, explains Sarchosidis.

Head of the 17 May committee in Bodø, Pål Fritzon, takes the weather forecast with crushing calm.

We are no longer northerners, so we stand by him. There is little we can do about the weather, and it is hoped that everyone will have a nice national day.

Mid-Norway is free from precipitation

It looks as if Trøndelag and Midt-Norway will be free from the rainfall.

When it comes to precipitation, the truth is quite small there.

But unlike the rest of the country is the temperatures uncertain in central Norway.

Here it is uncertain whether the spring-like air masses from the south come all the way up to Central Norway, or whether it is the cold from the north that hits.

It looks like we can expect lingering weather, but the temperature can swing in both directions, says the meteorologist.

In Central Norway, it is still uncertain whether the Russians can swing in stillongs or shorts, but they can most likely drop the umbrella.

High temperatures in the south

In southern Norway, more pleasant temperatures and spring-like air masses are expected, according to the meteorologist.

Both in East Norway, West Norway and South Norway, temperatures between 14 and 20 degrees are expected.

– For Southern Norway, it is quite safe to say that the air masses will give us pleasant temperatures, but the question is whether there will be precipitation or not.

It is easier to predict the temperatures than the precipitation, says the meteorologist.

There is a low pressure south of Norway, in the area around Germany and Poland. If the low pressure gets close enough, it can bring rain to southern Norway.

Then there is the highest probability of rain in the mountains in southern Norway, inland areas in southern Norway, and out towards the coast in western Norway and southern Norway.

The heat also depends on the rainfall.

If there is no precipitation, the temperature will probably manage to reach 20 degrees.

Strong winds are most likely in North-West Norway, near Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal.

Chairman of the May 17 committee in Bergen, Cecilie Lycke hopes that the rain stays away on the day of the party, but says they are prepared for both.

It is extra pleasant to have nice weather, but we have experienced that there is a good turnout even if the weather is not at its best.
