Sporveien has signed a contract for 20 new train sets for the subway – Stor-Oslo

--

– With these 20 new subway sets, even more people will be able to enjoy the subway, says city councilor for the environment and transport, Marit Kristine Vea (V).

Sporveien and Ruter presented the news about the major contract at the subway workshop in Ryen on Wednesday.

The price of 20 wagon sets with three wagons each is NOK 3.227 billion. That is NOK 350 million more than first thought.

Better both in the east and west

From 2029 the new trains will transport people on the Fornebubanen, but they will also run on the entire subway network.

– Dthereby increasing capacity in both the east and west of the city. The subway is unbeatable when it comes to both travel time and comfort, so this is an investment that makes Oslo both better and greener, says Vea.

But:

In order to fully utilize the capacity, even more trains and even more money are needed.

More on that later.

Same factory as the tram

The new carriages will be in addition to the current subway fleet of 115 trains. They were manufactured by Austrian Siemens and delivered between 2006 and 2014.

In the meantime, Oslo has got new trams. They too are supplied by Spanish CAF.

Trams and subways can thus be said to be cousins.

– The new trams are perceived as attractive and accessible. I think Oslo people will be very happy with our new subway cars too, says Group CEO of Sporveien, Birte Sjule.

QUITE SIMILAR: The new carriages are quite similar to those that run today, but have several new details for better safety and customer comfort, according to Sporveien.

She says that the new trains are not very different from the old ones, but contain several innovations.

  • Slightly wider doors (1.4 metres) for better flow when passengers get on and off.
  • More modern information system with digital screens in the roof arch and elsewhere.
  • More energy efficient with CO2-meters that top up with fresh air as needed.
  • So-called multifunctional areas with better space for wheelchairs, prams and bicycles.
  • Clear green and red alerts when the doors are opened and closed.
  • Cameras and detectors on the side and between the carriages for better security.
  • Polishing block on wheels and brakes for better braking effect on smooth rails.
  • More comprehensive system for monitoring and finding errors.

WIDER DOORS: It will be easier to get in and out of the new carriages.

More are needed

The new carriages will be delivered in the period 2027 to 2030. Twelve of them will be in place until the Fornebubanen opens in 2029.

It will have six new stations and 7.7 kilometers of double track in the tunnel between Majorstuen and the old airport.

Then a new signaling system will also be installed on the entire subway and an upgraded and more efficient Majorstuen station will be in place.

In order to make full use of the increased capacity, even more wagons are needed.

There is currently no money for that

How to get money for another nine wagon sets is one of the topics in Oslo package 3– the negotiations which are in the very final phase.

The contract with CAF also includes an option for a total of 90 more wagon sets to take account of the need even further into the future.
