Youth crime is increasing strongly in Oslo

The number of police reports against children and young people aged 10–17 increased by 56 per cent from 2022 to 2023.

That’s the equivalent of 1,000 reviews. When compared to the years before the pandemic, the increase in child and youth crime is lower.

– For violence, the increase is 55 per cent compared to 2022, says senior adviser at the Oslo police district Julie Jarland.

She presented the report on child and youth crime in Oslo on Friday SaLTo Oslo municipality and Oslo police district’s cooperation model to coordinate and co-ordinate the drug and crime prevention work towards children and young people.– the conference, which focuses on prevention.

The sharp increase comes after a significant decrease in registered crime among children and young people during the pandemic. But compared to the average for the last three years before corona, the increase was 21 per cent.

– At the same time have children. and youth crime has decreased significantly, if the development is moderated over a longer period of time, states the report.

Since 2006, the Oslo police district has prepared annual reports on crime and drug use among children and young people in Oslo municipality.

The reports focus on prevention and are prepared in close collaboration with the districts and other relevant municipal services.

The statistical material uses registered complaints with the crime scene in Oslo municipality, where the identified perpetrator is aged 10–22.

The largest category is crime for profit, including shoplifting. Six out of ten reports against girls are for profit-making.

There were 124 reports for robberies against children and young people in 2023. Those who commit the robberies are almost exclusively boys.

For the age group 10–14 years, the number of reports for crime for profit increased, compared to both 2022 and the years before the pandemic.

Preventive work

SaLTo is Oslo municipality and Oslo police district’s cooperation model for coordinating and co-ordinating the drug and crime prevention work towards children and young people.

Priority areas of effort in the coming years are:

  • joint efforts in vulnerable areas, where the challenges are complex in terms of living conditions and crime.
  • challenges related to substance abuse
  • peer violence
  • online crime prevention
