Fritt Ord announces grants for the dissemination of history based on Norwegian fiction, non-fiction and cartoons. Applicants can be public libraries and individuals and organizations that have agreements with libraries throughout Norway.
Every year since 2008, Fritt Ord has announced funding for the dissemination of literature in libraries. The purpose of the calls for tenders is to strengthen libraries as a dissemination arena.
With the call, Fritt Ord wants to stimulate the dissemination of literature and strengthen public libraries as an arena for dissemination.
Record high amount of support in 2023
In 2023, 76 libraries applied and 40 libraries received support to organize debates. Artificial intelligence was the theme that was repeated the most in the application pile in 2023, says senior advisor Oskar Kvasnes, who is responsible for the call for proposals.
The support from Fritt Ord 2023 was a total of NOK 2,395,000. It was the second highest amount since Fritt Ord began with library announcements in 2008.

Theme: History
This year’s theme is history, and Fritt ord states that, for example, funding can be sought for lectures, seminars, debates and conversations at the library.
“Which recent Norwegian history publications challenge old narratives? What historical publications will interest a local audience? Which groups and themes have been left out or marginalized in Norwegian history writing? Which historical themes engage and preoccupy today’s youth? How has history been used and abused politically and ideologically?”, writes the association in a press release.
