Putin sworn in for his fifth presidential term

Vladimir Putin has dominated Russian politics since 2000. The period he now embarks on lasts until 2030.

– We do not keep the West out, we are open to relations with other countries, but Western countries must make a choice, Putin said during the ceremony.

It is common in Russia for the incumbent government to resign after the president is sworn in, so that the head of state can form a new government.

There is particular tension over whether Foreign Minister Sergej Lavrov will continue after 20 years in the role. The future of Defense Minister Sergej Sjojgu is also considered uncertain, after one of his close associates was recently charged with corruption.

Navalny’s widow calls for battle

Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of the late Putin opponent Alexei Navalny, gave a video speech to her supporters on Tuesday. There she urged to continue the fight.

– Our country is led by a thief, a liar and a murderer, but this will end, she said.

– We cannot give up the fight.
