Heineken to invest NT$13.5 billion in new Taiwan brewery | Taiwan News

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Dutch brewing company Heineken NV announced on Friday (April 26) that it plans to invest NT$13.5 billion (US$414.07 million) over the next five years to set up a brewery in Taiwan to serve as a production base for the Northeast Asian market.

Speaking at a ceremony at its Pingtung brewery, President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said that Taiwan is Heineken’s second-largest overseas market. Lai also praised the company’s efforts to make its Pingtung brewery achieve net zero by 2024.

“This could serve as a reference for other manufacturing industries in Taiwan,” Lai said.

The president-elect said Pingtung has excellent geographical and water resource conditions that would allow the brewery to produce “the best-quality and most flavorful Heineken” and attract Heineken lovers to Taiwan to savor locally produced Heineken.

Lai said his visit to the southern brewery was to offer support and encourage closer integration between Heineken and the local community. He said he hopes the facility can become a source of pride for Pingtung and Taiwan.

Heineken Taiwan’s General Manager Wu Chien-fu (吳建甫) said the brewery company has been operating in Taiwan for 20 years and is loved by Taiwanese consumers, CNA reported. With support from the central and local governments, the company aims to supply the Northeast Asian market and promote “Made in Taiwan” internationally through the Pingtung brewery, Wu said.

Taiwan’s legal drinking age is 18. Overconsumption of alcohol can lead to serious health problems including heart disease, liver disease, or certain types of cancer. If necessary, the Taiwan Designated Driver APP can be easily downloaded on a smartphone.
