– I have withdrawn from the tournament. I have always enjoyed playing at the St Louis Chess Club and hope to be back in the future.

Magnus Carlsen signed it https://twitter.com/MagnusCarlsen/status/1566848734616555523?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1566848734616555523%7Ctwgr%5E000b4940b0daa248668925b65cd764cc649b8f8e%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vg.no%2Fsport%2Fi%2FxgAnRV%2Fkryptisk-melding-etter-sjokk-exit after withdrawing from the chess tournament in St. Louis.

During the Twitter message, the Norwegian posted a video of José Mourinho. In the video, the football coach gives the following message: “If I say something, I’m in trouble.”

– It is a drama and a scandal of great proportions. We have not seen anything like it in the last 50 years, so it is without a doubt a big deal, says chess expert Tarjei J. Svensen to Dagbladet.

Carlsen’s decision came the day after the defeat against American Hans Niemann.

– Proves nothing

Svensen points out that Niemann has been caught cheating before and thinks it is shocking that Carlsen withdrew from the tournament.

– We are talking about the best player of all time and Magnus has not explained his choice, but everything indicates that he is accusing Hans Niemann of cheating. There is no proof of anything, but Niemann has been caught cheating twice online before. It shows that he has been willing to do so in the past, but it proves nothing in this case. It is a special situation and if he is caught cheating, his career is over.

– Why do you think Carlsen uses the Mourinho quote?

– It’s probably because he has to be careful with what he says. He can risk punishment if he makes accusations and it is very difficult to prove anything. Magnus has almost no choice but to speak out, replies Svensen.

Furthermore, Svensen emphasizes that the threshold for cheating is high for a player in the world elite.

– Until now, very few have been suspected of cheating. Regardless of the outcome, Niemann will have that suspicion over him.

Niemann has not responded to any of the accusations after the match against Carlsen.

– I’m speechless

Hans Niemann says that he finds it strange that the Norwegian chose to retire.

– I’m speechless, to be honest. That’s very strange. First he gives up the world title, I was really surprised. And now this. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but it’s very strange. At least I managed to beat him before he left, that’s the good thing, told https://twitter.com/GrandChessTour/status/1566908495726891013?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1566908495726891013%7Ctwgr%5Ee6dba7a73ff70a46a56411fa83293ab9759d2bed%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tv2.no%2Fsport%2Fsjakk%2Fcarlsen-trekker-seg-fra-turnering-ekstremt-dramatisk%2F15074779%2F.

After Carlsen’s decision, there have also been a number of reactions.

– Sorry, but he could easily have played that game. There was nothing special about the way Hans played the game, says Lawrence Trent according to Chess24.

– It is obvious that Magnus suspects foul play, but is not willing to make a public accusation. The day before, he lost to Hans Niemann after a 53-game unbeaten streak, writes Chess24.

NRK’s chess expert, Torstein Bae, makes the following message on Twitter:

– The most likely thing is that Magnus thinks Niemann cheated during yesterday’s party (was helped by the program). But this is not stated and is of course a very dramatic claim at the very top level.
