At 21:00 on Saturday, the police received a report of concern that a man had not turned up for an appointment on Saturday morning. A formal missing person report was received the same evening.

The missing person, Endre Müller Gjendem, had been at the nightclub Madam Reiersen in the center of Arendal on the night of Saturday, and was last seen at approximately 02.15.

– A certain cause of death will not emerge until the final autopsy report is available, but based on the preliminary report, the hypothesis of a criminal act has not been strengthened. It appears most likely that this is an accident, says Helge Torsvik, head of investigation at Arendal and Froland police station.

On Monday, operations manager Øyvind Hægeland confirmed that a dead man had been found in the sea at Tyholmen, where the club is located, in Arendal.

– The main hypothesis is that an accident has occurred, Hægeland told VG.

The man has now been identified, and it was the 23-year-old who was found dead. Relatives have been notified.

Head of the investigation section at Arendal and Froland police station, Helge Torsvik, tells VG that there is nothing to indicate that anything criminal has happened.

The police and volunteer crews carried out a thorough search in the center of Arendal on Sunday without success. On Monday, the fire brigade sent divers into the search, and it was they who found the deceased.

Asking for tips

In connection with the investigation, the police are asking for information from people who may have observed or had contact with the man during the period in question.

– We are investigating broadly, and want witness observations and information from people who may have spoken to him. Everything can be of interest, said Hægeland on Monday.

Relatives have agreed to the police releasing their names and photos in connection with the case.
