We’ve tried the iPad Pro (2024) and Apple Pencil Pro – Sneak peek

At Tek you will find cases with advertisement links, where you can either buy the products we have mentioned or compare prices. We believe this is relevant information for our readers.

Which products Tek will write about, and what we will write about them, is chosen by the journalists and no one else. But it is also important that you know that if you click on such an ad link for price comparison at Prisjakt, or buy a product after clicking through to a store from one of our articles, Tek makes money. These ad links are always marked with “ad link”.

It is important to emphasize that when we mention products at Tek, it is because we think it is journalistically interesting. No one can buy publicity in our cases.

In tests or product guides, the main rule in VG is that we buy or borrow the product. If it is not practically possible, we base the review on product samples we have been sent. If so, we will inform you about which product and why.

But it’s the accessories we liked the most.

London/Tek.no: Apple surprised no one when it released its new gadgets at its launch event in London on Tuesday afternoon. We were pretty sure what was coming, and the rumors were spot on: An upgraded iPad Pro with an OLED screen, an even bigger iPad Air, a new Apple Pencil and a new keyboard for the Pro models.

We got to try the new gadgets a little after the launch, and the first thing we ran to was naturally the iPad Pro.

And yes, Apple hype notwithstanding, that one is actually surprisingly thin. Absurdly thin, I would actually say. Apple threw out the odd claim that this is the thinnest Apple product they’ve ever released, and with just 5.1 millimeters of thickness on the 13-incher, they’re probably right.

There are therefore two models, 11 inches and 13 inches, a slightly larger screen than the 12.9-inch predecessor, and it is the 13-inch that is the slimmest.

According to Apple, it should be as rigid as before, despite being so razor thin, and it definitely felt solid and good in the hand. But then we didn’t try to bend it either.

For the first time, the iPad Pro has an OLED screen, and to get proper brightness, they have placed two OLED panels on top of each other – a technique they have dubbed Tandem OLED – which should offer 1000 nits across the entire screen .

In practice? Excellent black level, good brightness and not least responsive, because here too there is support for 120 hz, as they have had in the past too. Apple loves to call its technologies new things, and the screen this time has been named “Ultra Retina XDR”.

Nano Texture screen on the left, regular on the right. The one on the left had very noticeably less glare from the lights in the ceiling, without compromising black levels or color reproduction.

Nano Texture impressed

One of the iPad Pro models on display also had the new screen treatment called Nano Texture, which made it far less prone to glare. The glossy glass surface we’ve become accustomed to on iPads was suddenly almost completely matte, but they still managed to keep the black level. We held two iPad Pros next to each other – one with Nano Texture and the other a regular glossy display – and the Nano Texture variant was truly impressive. We were told that the reason it was so convincing is because it is not a matter of a matte coating that is placed on top of the normal screen, but a separate treatment of the top screen layer, which helps to diffuse the light.

The disadvantage of the whole thing is that the Nano Texture screens cost NOK 1,400 more in Norway AND that it is only available on the variants with 1 and 2 Terabyte storage space. Then we are talking about a price tag that starts at NOK 24,000 for the 11-inch… Ouch.

Extreme performance, but what will it be used for?

It is difficult to write anything about the new iPad Pro without at least mentioning the extreme performance Apple has pushed into the machine. They skipped the M3 processor and went straight for a brand new M4 processor, and there was no telling what kind of performance improvements we can expect.

It is supposed to be 50 percent faster than the predecessor M2, and for the first time the iPad Pro will get ray tracing and so-called mesh shading. The new M4 processor should also be particularly power-saving and efficient, and Apple took a small kick at the PC competitors and said that their M4 processor only used a quarter of the power of a similar PC.

But how all this actually changes the way we use an iPad, we will simply see when we get it in for testing. What we got to see from the demos was naturally impressive, and while we can imagine that remotely controlling four iPhones recording simultaneously in Final Cut Pro could be useful, it wasn’t something we tried much of in our quick hands-on ».

New Apple Pencil – a solid upgrade

Despite the fact that the iPad Pro was impressive, lightning fast, razor thin and other superlatives, we also let ourselves be charmed by the accessories Apple released.

Apple Pencil Pro is the name of the new pen, which does not replace the regular Apple Pencil, but offers a couple of extra quirks.

New in the Pro model is that it supports rotation of the pen itself, so you can spin the pen around while you draw or write, and thus get a more natural result. For example, if you use a digital nib that is oblong, you will be able to see before you put the pen down which way the nib is turned, and turn it while you draw.

We both got a quick demonstration of the function, and tried a bit ourselves, and it all seemed very natural and easy to use.

A handy feature we didn’t notice at first was also that a digital shadow appears under the pen, which both shows what the tip looks like, but also which way the digital pen lies, to illustrate more precisely how the result will be.

A small haptic motor has now also been added to the Apple Pencil, which we really liked. Either when you double-tap the page to switch to the eraser, or long press the pen to bring up a new contextual menu on the screen, you feel a small vibration to confirm the selection. Simple but very satisfying.

This definitely needs to be explored a bit more when we actually get the pencil in for testing, together with the iPad Pro.

PS: Apple Pencil Pro also works with the new iPad Air, so luckily this isn’t something that’s only reserved for iPad Pro owners.

New Magic Keyboard

As the new iPad Pro has received a thinner chassis and slightly changed design, a new “Magic Keyboard” keyboard is also coming.

In many ways it is very similar to the previous one, which we had a taste for, but it also has a couple of improvements. It includes haptic feedback in the touchpad and larger wrist support on the side. A new function row at the top has also been added, so it all looks much more like a regular Mac keyboard now.

We thought the result was surprisingly good, and we actually didn’t feel any particular difference when we typed on this keyboard compared to the regular Mac keyboard.

But again, take this with a grain of salt, because there weren’t very many sentences we had time to hammer out before we had to move on.

It is also worth asking yourself how much it is actually worth paying for one keyboard. Apple has raised the price another notch this year, and the new keyboard costs an absurd NOK 4,800. Perhaps you would rather connect a superb external keyboard with USB-C instead? Or just buy a brand new iPad?
