Eurovision, Melodi Grand Prix | Eurovision: From political controversy to pure parody

--

Opinions This is a debate post. The post expresses the writer’s views.

Eurovision Song Contest was established in its time in the spirit of peace. Never more war in Europe.

From day one, this proved to be an insignificant paper document. Eurovision has always been politically “infected”.

This year, the whole thing is dragged out into parody, because now it’s all about politics. Nothing about music.

All the votes in the Israeli pot

The feature in yesterday’s Dagsnytt 18 can serve as a good enough illustration.

Here the editor of the Christian newspaper Dagen trumpets, Vebjørn Selbekkthat he has spent a hundred bucks on voting for the Israeli entry in this year’s final.

He can eagerly follow the FRP Foreigner Wiborg.

He has done the same as Selbekk; throw all their votes into the Israeli pot.

Wiborg has such sympathy for “the poor 20-year-old girl who has to have strict police protection on the way between the hotel and the arena”.

Now nothing is about music. It’s all about politics.

Would have voted for Palestine

To put it bluntly.

If Palestine had access to a place on the stage in Malmö, Mímir Kristjánsson (Red) and Kari Elisabeth Kaski (SV) would throw themselves around to get people to vote for the Palestinian contribution.

For the Eurovision Song Contest and Melodi Grand Prix, this is catastrophically destructive.

After yesterday’s tests, the national juries cast their votes. Those votes count for 50 percent when it all has to be settled just before midnight.

If we are to believe the leaks, Israel will come out well – perhaps Eden Golan and “Hurricane” will go all the way to the top.

Final in Jerusalem?

If Vebjørn Selbekk and Erlend Wiborg have enough soul mates around Europe, Israel may actually win the whole thing. Not because of music, but because of politics. And only that.

And then – next year’s final in Jerusalem?

The Eurovision Song Contest has been controversial for almost 60 years, not least in musical circles.

But now it may be over.

The competition will never survive a final in Jerusalem.
