Whales, Police | A permanent police force will be stationed at Hvaler this summer

--

In order for the police officers to also be able to move around the archipelago easily, a separate police boat will be stationed in the harbor at Skjærhalden throughout the summer.

This means a significant strengthening of the police’s presence on Hvaler, where cabins and boating lead to a doubling of the population during the busiest holiday season.

Staffed day and night

From 13 May until the end of August this summer, the police will have their own resources stationed at Skjærhalden.

Police contact Elisabeth Dahl says that there will be permanent staffing during the day and evening. At other times, resources are obtained from Fredrikstad police station.

– If anyone wants to contact us directly, we have fixed office days every Tuesday and Thursday between 9 and 11. Then you can meet us at the town hall in Skjærhalden by turning to the service square, says Elisabeth Dahl on Hvaler municipality’s website.

Considering four-year agreement

It has been several years since the Hvaler sheriff’s office was closed down.

After the sheriff’s office in Hvaler was closed down, there were no permanent police officers stationed in the municipality for a long time. But in recent years, the police have been present during the summer months.

A rental contract has now been signed between Hvaler municipality and the police for the current season. In the autumn, consideration will be given to writing a corresponding lease for a four-year period. The contract also contains provisions on reserved parking spaces for the police department.

In response to questions from the Federation, mayor Mona Vauger has previously said that the police should be on Skjærhalden, and that Skjærhalden is a more natural place for stationing the police than on Vesterøy.
