On Wednesday afternoon, there is less traffic on the roads out of Oslo than expected on the day before Ascension Day and squeezed in on Friday.

Friday is a packed day, and many people therefore consider it their average to take a long weekend at the cabin. It can mean traffic chaos. Photo: Tor Erik Schrøder / NTB

“Traffic is slowing down a bit compared to an hour ago,” says Trude Lindstad, traffic operator at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

A little before 17:00 on Wednesday afternoon, the traffic leaves the capital relatively smoothly. But there are queues on certain sections:

  • E18 westbound there is a queue between Sandvika and Holmen.
  • E6 to the south there is heavy traffic to Skullerud.
  • Out of Oslo to the north, there is a bit of a queue in the Opera tunnel and between Karihaugen and Hvam.

Queue in Oslo

In connection with the cramped Friday, many have taken a long weekend and may be heading to the cabin or elsewhere.

Earlier in the day, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration expected a lot of traffic and recommended waiting until after 6 p.m. to travel.

But with decreasing traffic out of Oslo, it doesn’t look like a problem. On the other hand, there are queues in some places on the way in to Oslo:

  • There is a lot of traffic and queues from Asker to Frognerstranda.
  • There is also a queue on the E6 from Alnabru towards the city centre.

Lindstad says this is due to the ban on electric cars in public transport, which was introduced on Monday.

In addition, there is some traffic on Ring 3 for those coming from Gaustad to Grefsen, but this is due to a narrowing of the road. The same applies from Sinsenkrysset and westwards towards Nydalen.
