17 May is just around the corner, and as usual the weather is a big factor on the national day.

Will it be sunglasses and ice, or umbrella and rain?

According to Yr, it is the former that still applies in several places in the country.

Meteorologist Espen Biseth Granan told Nettavisen on Tuesday that it could be as high as 20 degrees in Oslo on 17 May.

Yr’s weather overview agrees well with Granan’s forecasts. It shows 20 degrees in the middle of the day with a wind of 3 meters per second – which in technical terms is defined as light wind.

– There is still a long way to go, so changes can happen, says meteorologist on duty Charalampos Sarchosidis to Nettavisen.

In Drammen it can be as high as 21 degrees, but here there may be some precipitation when the evening descends. In Tønsberg, the preliminary forecasts are the same as in Oslo.

A little further south, in Kristiansand, it still looks like the thermometer will not exceed 16 degrees. However, the sun will shine in the summer city all day.

– In southern Norway, I would say that the air masses are reminiscent of May. I am not particularly worried that it will be particularly cold in the south, says Sarchosidis.

He continues:

– But that could change if a low pressure from southern Europe hits Norway. The question is how close it gets.

The rain does not occur in the west

If we look westwards to Stavanger, Bergen, Ålesund and Molde, the forecasts are still good. There will be no rain here, and it will be around 15 degrees everywhere.

Of the four cities, it will be the warmest in Bergen, which can get up to 18 degrees.

– In the west it is quite the same as in the east. There is absolutely a possibility that there will be really good weather here too, says Sarchosidis.

– What about wind?

– For the time being, it is likely that the north-west will get the most wind. But this is also far in the future, but as I see it, this is the most likely.

In Trondheim in Trøndelag, the preliminary forecast shows 17 degrees, light wind and light clouds.

Colder in the north

In the north we look at Bodø, Tromsø and Hammerfest. There, after all the sun marks, it looks like it won’t be as hot as in the south, but the forecasts are not too bad in some places.

In Bodø it can be up to 11 degrees with a light breeze from the north.

However, in Tromsø, or the Paris of the Nordics, it gets greyer. There, the forecasts show that it will be cloudy all day, with degrees between 4 and 7.

In Hammerfest there may be rain showers early in the day. These decrease over the national day, before there may be some rain in the evening, Yr’s weather overview shows. Here it will not be warmer than four degrees on 17 May.

– Although it is still a long way off, it looks like Northern Norway will get quite cool air. Then the question becomes whether there will be precipitation, and if so, there will be sleet in some places. It probably won’t be very springy in the north, says meteorologist Sarchosidis.
