Traffic and public transport, Oslo | Warns of major delays on the roads

--

(fb): Ascension Day Thursday and a cramped Friday means a long weekend and plans for many.

On Tuesday, the Norwegian Road Administration warns in a press release that they expect traffic jams in several places on the roads as a result of this very thing.

This Wednesday will be the big departure day in May.

Traffic figures from the month of May for the past three years show when and where there can be heavy traffic, and it is.

– Christ’s Ascension is set to be the big May departure weekend this year, and queues are to be expected from the big cities, especially Oslo.

This is what Christian Prydz, section leader at the Vegtrafikksentralen east in Oslo, says in the press release.

Delays on the E6 towards Sweden

And it is especially from Oslo and our way south that queues are expected, and then primarily on the E6 towards Sweden through Østfold.

The traffic figures show that of those who drove out of Oslo on the Wednesday before Christ’s Ascension in 2022, and drove longer than 10 miles, 37 percent headed for Sweden.

The E18 towards Sørlandet can also become very congested.

Here, in both 2021 and 2022, there was a doubling in delays compared to normal rush hour traffic, writes the Norwegian Road Administration.

Also on the way home on Sunday, it can be congested with cars, logically enough.

– The traffic is spread out more on the journey home on Sunday, also because rush hour traffic is avoided as an additional factor, explains Prydz.

When should you drive?

Traffic data from 2021 and 2022 shows when the delays occur on the Wednesday before Christ’s Ascension.

It started around 2pm, peaked between 3pm and 5pm and lasted until around 8pm on the most popular routes.

– Consider whether you can drive earlier or later in the day. If you drive between 2pm and 6pm, you must be prepared for delays, especially if you are driving towards Sweden or towards the South from Oslo on this day, says Prydz in the press release.
