Traffic and public transport, Parking | If this shocks the MDGs, I hope for many big and small shocks ahead

Opinions This is a debate post. The post expresses the writer’s views.

On 24 April, 20 free motorcycle parking spaces opened in the middle between the National Theater and Spikersuppa. This was one of the Progress Party’s breakthroughs in the budget negotiations with the city council parties.

I believe our city needs new measures to invite people to participate in city life in central Oslo. This should be easy and affordable. After a few weeks, we can now clearly see how welcome this measure has been among motorcycle enthusiasts.

However, MDG’s Tom Kristian Berger was not as welcome. He was shocked when he saw what the Progressive Party had set up. We hope he gets over it quickly and can rather be happy that more people will be able to access the center of Oslo this summer.

There is still plenty of room for ordinary bicycles. For the Progress Party, the most important thing is that people can decide for themselves how to get around. Be it on a bicycle with or without a motor.

Benefit for city life

I think free motorcycle parking will attract more people to the city. There are many people who can imagine riding a motorbike to the center of Oslo to go shopping, have lunch or an ice cream in the sun. They might not get on the train for the same.

More free parking spaces for motorbikes is a win-win solution for our city that brings benefits in several areas. When the center is easily accessible, it will provide a richer city life and hopefully more tourists. Our city needs it.

For many, motorcycling is a welcome hobby where you go on trips and experiences together. This brings great joy in everyday life for many enthusiasts. I think it is positive to make arrangements for that. But the motorcycle can also be a means of getting where you need to go quickly and efficiently.

FrP believes that this not only gives motorcyclists the freedom they deserve, but also ensures efficient access. It is time to recognize the important role that motorbikes can play in Oslo traffic, and to make arrangements for a city that is accessible, vibrant and inclusive for even more people.

If it is shocking for the MDGs, I hope for many big and small shocks in the coming years.
