– I am happy and proud that the MDGs have now adopted an effective and understandable climate policy that is realistic, and that actually delivers what we have been asked by the UN and our obligations under the Paris Agreement, says Une Bastholm in a press release where the new decisions are presented.

Among the decisions is a new target for emission cuts. The party wants Norway to cut 80 percent of its territorial emissions by 2035 compared to 1990, and that this target be reported to the UN.

In addition, options were adopted for how the goal is to be reached, including a stricter prioritization of power use and a better safeguarding of nature’s carbon stock.

Bastholm uses the opportunity to criticize both Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) and Erna Solberg (H) for what she believes is a planless and hesitant climate policy that does not cut emissions.

– It is the lack of commitments and predictability that now threatens a fair transition, because it is the money-rich people and companies that do best. MDG will do something about that, and I am proud of that, says Bastholm.

MDG also decided that they want a change in the oil fund’s mandate. The change means that the fund’s investments must be managed according to a fixed, downward carbon limit.

– The oil fund is one of the world’s largest investment funds. One of the most effective things the government can do then is to ensure that the oil fund invests smartly and climate-friendly, says party leader Arild Hermstad to NRK.
