Trondheim municipality has made a mistake, and it will cost several million kroner to correct it. That money should be used elsewhere.

Trondheim municipality have major financial problems. Much more money is needed for health and care, schools, social assistance and in several other areas. Politicians are now pondering how to avoid the municipality running into a large deficit this year.
At the same time tells Adresseavisen that a stone slip in Ila could cause the municipality additional expenses of perhaps three to five million kroner. The case concerns the extensive work being done in Nordre Ilevollen.
There was the plan to lay granite slabs on the pavement outside the row of old wooden houses along Ilaparken. The contractor did not get that message, and they have laid 200 meters of concrete slabs. The municipality is now considering whether to remove the concrete and replace it with granite. This will mean delays and large additional expenses.
Many may want to believe that it is not so important whether there is concrete or granite on the pavement. Yes, it is careful. Granite is prettier, and it matters how the city streets look. In addition, the pavements must last for many decades, and the municipality must choose a material that holds up well. Granite is more durable.

When the mistake is made, we still believe it is wrong to spend several millions and a long time to correct it. When the economy is so strained, the municipality must save where possible. The work in Nordre Ilevollen has already encountered problems that are making the project more expensive and time-consuming than planned. Then they have to make do with concrete slabs on the pavement.
The work in Nordre Ilevollen goes on a different budget than health, care and school. But it is the overall spending in Trondheim that is the problem. Therefore, it is necessary to save where possible.
It is important that the city streets are in order and the road surface does not have ugly holes. Kongens gate, Nordre Ilevollen and several other streets need a major upgrade. It is good that the municipality and the Environmental Package have now started this work. But when the economy in the city is so strained, they have to avoid extra expenses that are not absolutely necessary.
