Policy: By support is meant, among other things, medical help and rehabilitation and financial and psychological assistance to released political prisoners and persons who have been subjected to political repression.

– The situation for political prisoners in Belarus is very disturbing. There is a great need for such assistance for the rehabilitation of former political prisoners and their families, says Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide (Ap) in a press release.

It is the leader of the Belarusian democracy movement, Svetlana Tikhanovskaja, who has initiated the creation of the fund.

Tikhanovskaja is in Oslo on Monday and Tuesday this week, where she will meet both Eide and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap). She will also meet with other politicians and participate in the Words Matter conference.
