Reader’s letter This is a debate entry, written by an external contributor. The post expresses the writer’s views.

He initially chose to dig into the past, which might be useful for understanding the present. The not-too-distant past is probably mostly about “the boys who come down from the ice”. It is about whaling, about a thriving business community and about “full employment”.

Knowing some whalers was helpful. Green bananas in bunches and fruit flavored chewing gum. First journey at 15-16 years of age milled around on new motorbikes, and a pulsating nightlife had good times. This also applied to the taxi industry, although the bikes were eventually brought out of oblivion as the start of the season approached. Not to forget the “Fishing wave”, joy of reunion and increased desire to buy. There was competition across the municipalities for the lowest possible tax rate. Fortunes increased, while the whale population reached a low.

Do the people behind Think Sandefjord really think that some of these people think that life is wonderful?

Espen Thoresen is concerned about an alleged champagne culture in the city. He need not worry. With the proposal for only 15 minutes parking time at Vinmonopolet, there will be little time to buy bubbles, and a short ferry ride is not without risk.

Words and drawings do not replace action. He reminds us of that. “Think big” was launched in 2016 with metre-high letters in Badeparken, not in plastic, but noble wood, oak, teak or mahogany. After massive opposition, the proposal was shelved and the slogan was eventually replaced with “Think Sandefjord”. Letters became new words.

I have often thought: What would the local entrepreneur who took the company out into the big world with success and billions of dollars in profit say, if he was reminded every day to think big from his apartment near Badeparken? After all, he had long ago thought big, and not least long ago acted!
