Car traffic is increasing in Norway – so far we drive in Randaberg

The average mileage for Norwegian passenger cars was 11,274 kilometers in 2023. This is an increase of 1.6 per cent from the previous year.

DRIVING: This is shown by figures from Statistics Norway (SSB), which keeps track of how much we use the car.

It turns out that passenger cars registered in District Norway cover fewer kilometers per year than cars registered in central Eastern Norway.

Asker and Bærum are above the national average with respectively 11,928 and 11,446 kilometers per passenger car annually. In Oslo, a passenger car drove an average of 11,704 kilometers last year.

The statistics also include Randaberg. For motorists in Randaberg, an average of 11,084 kilometers were driven in 2023.

Below you can see the overview from municipalities in Rogaland and in column two you can see how many kilometers were covered.

In comparison, a passenger car drove 10,169 kilometers in Alta and 10,262 kilometers in Hammerfest, i.e. far below the national average. Tromsø is also below the average with 10,593 kilometers per passenger car.

In Finnmark, only cars in Karasjok and Nesseby drive more than 12,000 kilometers annually, the Statistics Norway figures show.

Otherwise, quite a lot of cars are driven on Romerike. Most of all in Gjerdrum municipality, which tops the national statistics with 13,329 kilometers per passenger car. Nannestad and Vestby are also over 13,000 annual kilometers.

So do Åseral and Bykle in Agder, Engerdal in Innlandet and Høylandet in Trøndelag.

People living on the small island municipalities of Værøy (7,265 km), Røst (7,508 km) and Kvitsøy (8,140 km) used the car the least. In the list of the ten municipalities with the fewest kilometers per car, only Vevelstad in Helgeland is not an island. There, an average car traveled 8,711 kilometers last year.
